Sanjay Dutt’s Daughter, Psychotherapist Trishala Dutt, Speaks Out on Emotional Abuse: Decodes the ‘Silent Treatment’

Mumbai: Trishala Dutt, the elder daughter of actor Sanjay Dutt and a practicing psychotherapist based in the United States, has ignited a conversation on emotional health and toxic relationship dynamics through a detailed social media post. Addressing the subtle yet damaging tactic of emotional manipulation, she specifically called out the use of silence as a weapon.

In her insightful note, Trishala delineated the critical difference between healthy space and harmful punishment. She explained that when one partner consistently employs the “silent treatment” in response to disagreements, boundaries, or differing perspectives, it transcends mere conflict and becomes a form of control.

“Instead of communicating their feelings, some people decide to punish the other person for having boundaries or a different perspective,” she wrote. “They are silently ‘teaching’ you that your voice is dangerous, and that speaking up will cost you connection with them.”

Labeling this behavior unequivocally, Trishala stated, “Silence used as punishment is abuse.” She urged individuals facing such treatment to recognize it for what it is and to prioritize their well-being. “Refuse such abuse and protect your peace,” she advised, adding a powerful counterpoint: “Real relationships don’t teach you lessons through pain, they heal through communication.”

Providing a Roadmap for Healthier Conflict

Moving beyond diagnosis, Trishala offered a constructive alternative, distinguishing between a “power play” and “self-respect.” She advocated for what she termed a “healthy silence”—a conscious, communicated pause meant for de-escalation, not punishment.

The key, she emphasized, is communication before the pause: “I need a few hours to collect myself so I don’t say something hurtful.” This, she clarified, must be followed by a return to dialogue to address the core issue. She concluded with a clear mantra for her followers: “Silence that protects your nervous system is self-respect. Silence that punishes someone else is power play.”

The Personal Context Behind the Post

While Trishala did not direct her message at anyone specific, it has inevitably led to speculation about her relationship with her father, Sanjay Dutt, and his family. Trishala is Dutt’s daughter from his first marriage to the late Richa Sharma, who passed away in 1996. Sanjay Dutt later married Maanayata Dutt in 2008, and the couple welcomed twins, Shahraan and Iqra, in 2010.

Unlike the twins, who are occasionally seen in public with their parents, Trishala has largely stayed out of the Bollywood limelight, building her career and life in the US. Her posts, often focused on mental health and personal empowerment, resonate with a wide audience but are sometimes viewed through the lens of her complex family history.

By sharing her professional expertise on this platform, Trishala Dutt has transformed a personal reflection into a public service message, empowering many to identify and reject coercive silence in their own relationships.
