Sunken City and a Pharaoh’s House Underground in Egypt: What’s the Truth?

In recent days, social media platforms have been flooded with viral videos claiming to document “astonishing archaeological discoveries” hidden beneath the ground in Egypt.
These clips, which racked up millions of views, sparked heated debates among users, raising the question: Are we witnessing real discoveries, or just carefully crafted digital content designed to attract attention?

Explanations varied: some attributed the scenes to the Giza Pyramids area, others linked them to submerged ruins in Alexandria, while another group claimed they depicted a lost civilization in Yemen’s Hadramaut.

One of the most widely circulated videos, titled “Exploring a Pharaoh’s House Underground,” showed people in green uniforms inspecting coffins and artifacts inside tunnels. The video alone garnered over 114 million views in just 10 days.

Borderless Visual Content

An investigation by Al Jazeera Verify revealed that these videos rely on cinematic-style production, eerie music, and suspenseful effects, and are often tagged with hashtags such as #Exploration, #DeepDive, #Egypt, and #Pyramid.
Most of the videos are also reproduced in multiple languages—including Arabic, English, Spanish, and Bengali—helping them spread quickly across borders.

The Truth Behind the Videos

Verification showed that all claims associated with these videos are false—both regarding their alleged locations and the supposed “discoveries.”
Specialized analysis confirmed the clips were entirely AI-generated and were first posted between August 13 and 17, 2025.

The original source is a TikTok account named Glint Gaze, which has produced over 90 similar AI-generated videos since March 2025, amassing more than 200 million views. The account even promotes a “digital guide” on how to create cinematic AI content tailored for social platforms without ever appearing on camera.

A Context that Fueled the Misinformation

The viral AI clips coincided with a real archaeological discovery in Egypt, which helped fuel their spread.
On August 21, 2025, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced that an archaeological mission had successfully recovered three massive and unique artifacts from the depths of the Mediterranean Sea—the first such recovery in about 25 years.

The discoveries included:

• A colossal quartz statue of a sphinx bearing the cartouche of Pharaoh Ramses II.
• A granite statue of an unidentified man from the late Ptolemaic period.
• A white marble statue of a Roman nobleman.

According to Dr. Mohamed Ismail, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the Abu Qir archaeological site remains a living testament to Egypt’s grandeur, and still holds secrets that continue to reveal new chapters of the story of “Sunken Egypt.”
