Afghanistan Resumes Pension Payments for Civilian and Military Retirees

Afghanistan has resumed pension payments for civilian and military retirees after a long suspension, offering long-awaited financial relief to thousands of families.

The Ministry of Finance confirmed that payments are being issued under the direct instructions of Taliban leadership, but only to retirees whose documents have been verified and approved by a designated court. According to Mohammad Rahmani, Director General of the Pension Fund, pensions will be distributed according to a nationwide schedule to ensure transparency and proper organization.

The current list of eligible retirees includes former employees of the National Standards Authority, the Disaster Preparedness Directorate, the Ministry of Martyrs and Disabled, the Directorate of Physical Education, the Administrative Reform Commission, the Ministry of Economy, the Environmental Directorate, and the former National Security Council.

Pension payments had been suspended since the Taliban’s return to power, pending a comprehensive review of records. To manage this process, a special court was established to authenticate the identities and documentation of retirees. With a portion of this verification now completed, payments have restarted.

According to Finance Ministry figures, about 152,000 retirees are currently eligible for payments. By comparison, the United Nations estimated last year that roughly 170,000 individuals were entitled to pensions. Many retirees had previously voiced frustration over repeated delays and non-payment.

Officials stressed that only those with fully validated documents will receive their pensions, as the government seeks to implement a more controlled and transparent system.
