Afghanistan Saffron Crowned World’s Best for Tenth Consecutive Year at Brussels Competition

BRUSSELS – Herat saffron has once again been awarded the world’s top quality title, marking a decade of uninterrupted global supremacy at the prestigious Global Taste Awards in Brussels. The International Taste Institute, which organizes the competition, announced that “Herat Saffron” brand prevailed in a field of elite producers, securing the highest distinction for quality for the tenth consecutive year.

The annual blind-tasting event assembles a jury of more than 250 internationally renowned chefs, sommeliers, and food scientists. Products are rigorously evaluated on key sensory criteria including flavor intensity, aroma, texture, and overall harmony.

This year’s saffron category was intensely competitive, featuring leading producers from traditional powerhouses such as Iran, Spain, and Greece. Despite this, Herat’s offering consistently distinguished itself. Judges highlighted its exceptional characteristics, noting “a remarkably potent coloring strength, a complex and rich aroma with floral and honeyed notes, and a perfectly balanced, nuanced flavor without bitterness.”

The repeated victory solidifies Herat saffron’s status not just as a leading Afghan export, but as a benchmark for premium quality in the global spice industry. “Achieving this recognition once is an accomplishment; sustaining it for a decade is a testament to unwavering excellence and meticulous production standards,” a competition representative stated.

The ascent of Herat saffron is a story of deliberate agricultural transformation. Introduced in the early 2000s as a sustainable, high-value alternative to poppy cultivation, saffron farming has provided a legal and profitable livelihood for thousands of Afghan families. Herat Province’s unique agro-climatic conditions—characterized by cold winters, dry summers, and mineral-rich, well-drained soil—prove ideal for cultivating crocus sativus with high concentrations of crocin, picrocrocin, and safranal, the compounds responsible for its color, taste, and scent.

A recent scientific study published in Advances in Horticultural Sciences corroborates these sensory accolades. The research found that Herat saffron consistently ranks in the top international grade (Category I), frequently outperforming competitors in critical chemical markers for purity and potency.

For Afghanistan, the impact of this continued recognition extends far beyond a trophy. “This award is a powerful signal to international markets,” said a Herat-based exporter. “It validates the dedication of our farmers and directly boosts demand, which in turn supports rural employment, empowers women who form the backbone of the harvest, and promotes long-term economic stability in the region.”

As global demand for premium, traceable spices grows, Herat saffron stands poised to maintain its celebrated position, representing a resilient and thriving sector of Afghan agriculture on the world stage.
