Bannu Attack: 12-Hour Clash Leaves Six Security Personnel and Six Militants Dead

A major militant assault on a Pakistani security base in Bannu, near the Afghanistan border, left six security personnel and six militants dead, with nearly two dozen others injured during an intense 12-hour battle, officials confirmed Tuesday.

According to police, the attack began when militants rammed a vehicle packed with explosives into the perimeter wall of the base before storming the facility with heavy weapons. The blast caused significant structural damage and sparked fierce fighting that continued through the night.

Sajjad Khan, Bannu’s police chief, reported that 16 members of the security forces and three civilians sustained injuries. He praised the troops for their “extraordinary bravery” in preventing the attackers from overrunning the compound.

Officials said the militants employed tactics reminiscent of the Afghan Taliban, including suicide bombings and the use of vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs)—methods frequently used during the U.S. and former Afghan government presence across the border.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Pakistani authorities suspect the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the main insurgent outfit active in the tribal belt since 2007.

The assault has renewed concerns over cross-border militancy. Pakistani officials have long accused the Taliban government in Afghanistan of sheltering TTP fighters, while recent Pakistani airstrikes have targeted suspected militant hideouts in Nangarhar and Khost provinces.

Human rights organizations, however, have raised alarm over civilian casualties in these operations, with reports that women and children have been among the victims.

The Bannu attack underscores the persistent volatility of Pakistan’s north-western border region, where security forces continue to face waves of militant violence despite repeated counterterrorism campaigns.
