Following Call with Trump, Putin Convenes Security Council to Discuss Ukraine Summit Proposal

MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin swiftly convened a meeting of his powerful Security Council on Friday, a move the Kremlin stated was a direct follow-up to a phone conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump. The high-level assembly, reported by Russian news agencies citing Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, underscores the strategic importance Moscow places on the dialogue.

According to Ushakov, President Putin provided the council with a “detailed briefing” on his discussion with Trump, focusing on a mutual agreement to hold another summit addressing the war in Ukraine. The proposal for high-level talks represents a significant political development, coming at a critical juncture in the conflict.

A Surprise Diplomatic Gambit

The agreement for a new summit, reached on Thursday, caught many international observers by surprise. It coincides with a period of heightened anxiety in Moscow, as the United States deliberates on a fresh, multi-billion dollar military aid package for Kyiv.
