Gaza Health Ministry Reports Over 69,000 Palestinians Killed as Fragile Truce Holds

GAZA STRIP – The Gaza Health Ministry announced on Saturday that the death toll from the ongoing Israeli military offensive has surpassed 69,000, a stark figure that underscores the devastating human cost of the nearly two-year-long conflict. The ministry reported that at least 69,169 Palestinians have been killed, with an additional 170,685 wounded, since the war began with Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The latest significant jump in the death toll is attributed to two primary factors: the recovery of more bodies from the rubble in areas recently accessible due to a tenuous ceasefire, and the identification of previously unknown remains. This process has become a grim routine during pauses in the fighting, as rescue crews dig through the ruins of countless buildings destroyed in airstrikes and artillery bombardments.

A Delicate Exchange Under the Truce

The grim statistics were released amidst a fragile, US-brokered ceasefire that has temporarily halted the fighting. The truce facilitated a somber exchange on Saturday, highlighting the deeply personal losses on both sides.

Israel returned the bodies of 15 Palestinians to Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing. The Al-Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis confirmed it had received the remains. This transfer came a day after Hamas militants returned the remains of an Israeli hostage to Israel.

The exchange was conducted under the terms of the ceasefire agreement, which, according to sources, stipulates the return of 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli hostage repatriated.

Identifying the Fallen

In a statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that the hostage’s remains returned on Friday night were those of Lior Rudaeff, a 61-year-old Israeli. Rudaeff was reportedly killed while fighting Hamas militants during their initial cross-border assault on October 7, 2023, which ignited the current war. His body had been held by Hamas in Gaza since then.

The return of Rudaeff’s remains and the subsequent repatriation of the 15 Palestinians represent a small but significant confidence-building measure in a conflict characterized by profound distrust.

Context and Scrutiny of the Casualty Figures

The Gaza Health Ministry’s casualty figures have been closely monitored throughout the conflict. While Israel has at times questioned the ministry’s immediate ability to verify data amid the chaos, its figures from previous conflicts have generally been deemed reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies, including the World Health Organization. The ministry’s counts are based on reports from hospital directors and emergency services across the strip.

The updated death toll of over 69,000 includes a high proportion of women and children, a point frequently emphasized by Palestinian authorities and international aid organizations to illustrate the conflict’s impact on civilians. The vast number of wounded, at 170,685, has overwhelmed Gaza’s decimated healthcare system, which struggles to function with a lack of supplies, fuel, and intact medical facilities.

A Precarious Path Forward

The current ceasefire, while fragile, has provided a critical respite for Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, who face a dire humanitarian crisis including widespread displacement, hunger, and the spread of disease. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing to extend the truce and negotiate further hostage and prisoner exchanges.

However, the underlying issues remain unresolved. The Israeli government has stated its goal is the complete dismantlement of Hamas’s military and governing capabilities, while Hamas leaders have vowed to continue fighting. With both sides signaling a readiness to return to hostilities, the temporary calm hangs in the balance, and the recovery of bodies from the rubble serves as a tragic reminder of the war’s immense human toll.
