Israel Widely Condemned After Killing of 5 Al Jazeera Staff in Gaza

Funerals have been held for five Al Jazeera staff members assassinated by Israel in a targeted attack on Gaza City.

Al Jazeera condemned the killing of correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Moamen Aliwa, and their assistant Mohammed Noufal, describing it as a “desperate attempt to silence the voices exposing the impending seizure and occupation of Gaza.”

The Committee to Protect Journalists demanded accountability, the National Press Club called for an inquiry, and the Freedom of the Press Foundation urged action to prevent further attacks on the media.

Australia announced it will recognise a Palestinian state at the United Nations in September.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 61,430 people and wounded 153,213. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023 attacks, and more than 200 were taken captive.
