Judge Frank Caprio, Beloved Star of Caught in Providence, Dies at 88

Judge Frank Caprio, the longtime Providence municipal judge whose compassion on the bench made him an international television star, has died at the age of 88 after a battle with cancer.

Caprio’s family confirmed his passing on Wednesday, August 20, saying he died peacefully “after a long and courageous fight.” He had publicly revealed his diagnosis in December 2023, sharing updates on his treatment and reflections on gratitude and resilience with his 1.7 million Instagram followers.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee paid tribute to Caprio as a “Rhode Island treasure” and ordered flags at state buildings flown at half-staff until his funeral.

Caprio rose to fame through Caught in Providence, a courtroom show that aired locally for more than two decades before gaining national syndication. Clips of his rulings—often marked by empathy, humor, and humanity—went viral online, garnering millions of views and turning him into a cultural icon of compassionate justice.

Tributes poured in from across the United States and beyond, with admirers praising him as a rare figure in the legal world who seamlessly blended fairness with kindness.

Colleagues and fans alike say Caprio’s legacy will endure, not only as a jurist but also as a media figure who redefined how justice could be delivered—with empathy at its core.
