MADRID – On the two-year anniversary of the Al-Aqsa Flood operation, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez issued a strong condemnation of “terrorism in all its forms” while simultaneously urging his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, to end what he described as the “genocide of the Palestinian people.”
In a post on the social media platform X, Sánchez marked the somber occasion by stating, “Today marks two years since the horrific attacks carried out by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). This is an occasion to reaffirm our firm condemnation of terrorism in all its forms, to demand the immediate release of Israeli hostages, and to urge Netanyahu to put an end to the genocide of the Palestinian people and open a humanitarian corridor.”
He further emphasized that “dialogue and the consolidation of the two-state solution are the only viable path to ending the conflict and achieving a peaceful future.”
Spain’s Critical Stance and Concrete Actions
Spain has emerged as one of Israel’s most vocal critics in Europe regarding its military offensive in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023. The Spanish government, which officially recognized the State of Palestine in 2024, has recently backed its rhetoric with policy.
Last month, the government approved a decree to implement a “complete” ban on arms exports to Israel. Prime Minister Sánchez stated the measure is part of a series of actions designed to pressure Israel to halt the “genocide in Gaza.”
The Spanish parliament is scheduled to vote on this arms embargo today, Tuesday. The proposed ban would prohibit all exports of defensive materiel, related products, and dual-use technologies that could be used in the conflict to Israel, as well as their import from Israel.
The Human Cost in Gaza
The war in Gaza, which began after Hamas’s attack on Israel, has drawn widespread international condemnation and accusations of genocide against Israel, which receives significant military and diplomatic support from the United States.
According to Palestinian health authorities, the Israeli offensive has resulted in over 67,173 fatalities and 169,780 injuries, the majority of whom are children and women. Furthermore, a severe man-made famine has claimed the lives of at least 460 Palestinians, including 154 children, exacerbating the humanitarian catastrophe.
