WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold their first one-on-one summit since 2018 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson near Anchorage, Alaska, the White House said Wednesday.
The meeting, scheduled for Friday, will focus on ending the more than three-year war in Ukraine. The base—formed in 2010 by merging Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson—is home to Alaska Command and the Alaskan NORAD Region, responsible for aerospace defense and monitoring near US airspace.
US forces in Alaska routinely intercept Russian aircraft approaching the area, contacting them visually or electronically.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since beginning his second term, Trump has pushed for a peace deal, but efforts have yet to produce a breakthrough.
