WASHINGTON/MOSCOW (Aug. 9) — U.S. President Donald Trump will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, the White House confirmed Friday. The Kremlin called the summit “quite logical” and invited Trump to visit Russia afterward.
Trump said a peace deal involving Russia and Ukraine is “very close” and could include “territorial exchanges to the benefit of both sides.” He suggested the agreement might be signed within days, adding that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “must be ready to sign something.”
Zelenskyy, however, reiterated Saturday that Ukraine will not cede territory to “occupiers,” insisting “any solution without Ukraine is a solution without peace.”
Sources told The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg that Putin is prepared to back a ceasefire if Russia keeps parts of occupied Ukraine, including Crimea. Putin reportedly told U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff he would accept a full ceasefire if Ukraine withdraws from Donetsk and gives up Luhansk and Crimea.
The talks come as Trump’s ultimatum to Putin to secure peace nears its August 8 deadline, moved up from a previous September 2 cutoff.
