Ukraine’s Allies Voice Concern Over US Peace Plan, Citing “Difficult Moment”

A US-proposed plan to end the Russia-Ukraine war is facing significant pushback from Ukraine’s key allies and the government in Kyiv, who have called the draft a starting point that “will require additional work.”

The concerns were formally raised in a joint statement by the leaders of Canada, Japan, and multiple European nations during the G20 summit. While acknowledging the plan contains elements “essential for a just and lasting peace,” the allies pointed to two major points of contention: proposed border changes enforced by Russia’s military and caps on the size of Ukraine’s armed forces, which they fear would leave the country vulnerable to future attacks.

The 28-point plan, presented by the US administration of President Donald Trump, has placed immense pressure on Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky warned his nation is facing “one of the most difficult moments in our history,” alluding to the difficult choice between accepting unfavorable terms or risking the loss of a key partner.

Key elements of the leaked US draft include:

  • Territorial Concessions: Ukrainian troops would withdraw from the parts of the eastern Donetsk region they still control, effectively cementing Russian control over Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea.

  • Military Caps: Ukraine’s military would be limited to 600,000 personnel.

  • Sanctions Relief: Russia would be reintegrated into the global economy through the lifting of sanctions and an invitation to rejoin the G7.

President Trump has given Ukraine until November 27 to accept the plan, stating, “One way or another we have to get it ended.” However, he also clarified that the current draft is not his “final offer.”

The diplomatic efforts continue, with security officials from the US, UK, France, Germany, and Ukraine set to meet in Geneva to discuss the proposal further.
