UN Warns of Catastrophic Flooding and Disease Risk for Displaced Gazans as Vital Aid Blocked

GAZA STRIP – The United Nations has issued an urgent warning that hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians in Gaza are facing a new crisis of catastrophic flooding and heightened disease risk, exacerbated by the blocking of critical emergency supplies. The warning follows torrential rains that swept across the coastal enclave on Thursday, submerging makeshift camps and claiming the life of an infant.

A Perfect Storm of Hardship

Heavy rainfall has flooded the tents and shelters of families already displaced by over two years of war, transforming displacement sites into waterlogged quagmires. Local health officials reported the death of a baby girl due to exposure. According to the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM), the storm has placed nearly 795,000 displaced people at heightened risk from dangerous flooding.

“Many displacement sites sit on low, debris-filled land with inadequate drainage and waste management, leaving families at heightened risk of disease outbreaks and other public health hazards as the flooding spreads,” the IOM stated. The agency emphasized that shelter items it has previously dispatched, including waterproof tents, thermal blankets, and tarpaulins, “cannot withstand” the current severe flooding.

Critical Aid Blocked at a Critical Time

The crisis is being compounded by severe access restrictions. The IOM reported that essential materials to reinforce shelters—such as timber, plywood, sandbags, and water pumps—have been systematically delayed from entering Gaza. This blockage hinders any effective response to the flooding and leaves families with no means to protect themselves.

“People in Gaza have lived through loss and fear for far too long,” said IOM Director General Amy Pope in a strongly worded statement. “Now, after this storm made landfall yesterday, families are trying to protect their children with whatever they have. They deserve more than this uncertainty. They deserve safety.”

Pope called for “immediate and unhindered access” so that tools and supplies can reach those struggling to survive. “Unimpeded deliveries of shelter supplies and other aid are necessary to respond to the crisis,” she stressed.

Broader Context of Destruction and Need

While a fragile ceasefire has largely held since October, the war has obliterated much of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure. Living conditions remain dire, with UN and Palestinian officials estimating an urgent need for at least 300,000 new tents to shelter the roughly 1.5 million people still displaced.

The Israeli military body responsible for coordinating humanitarian aid, COGAT, has repeatedly stated that it meets its obligations and has accused aid agencies of operational inefficiencies and failing to prevent the diversion of supplies by Hamas—a charge the group denies. COGAT was not immediately available for comment on the specific allegations of blocked shelter materials.

The convergence of extreme weather, rampant disease risks, crippling aid restrictions, and the unprecedented scale of displacement has created what aid agencies describe as a perfect storm of human suffering, threatening a population already pushed to the brink.
