UNICEF: Mass Return of Afghan Migrants from Iran Puts Heavy Strain on Border Resources and Basic Services
Kabul – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported that in the first half of this year alone, more than 714,000 Afghan migrants have returned from Iran to Afghanistan — with 70 percent forcibly deported.
In its latest humanitarian situation report released on July 31, UNICEF states that between January 1 and June 29, 2025, a total of 714,572 Afghans returned from Iran, with over 256,000 entering Afghanistan in June alone.
According to the report, 99 percent of returnees lacked legal residency documents, and 70 percent were forcibly deported by Iranian authorities.
UNICEF further notes that unlike previous months — when mostly single men were returning — entire families are now facing deportation.
The organization warns that this unprecedented wave of returns has placed immense pressure on border resources and basic services, while severe funding shortages are limiting the ability of aid agencies to respond effectively.
UNICEF also highlighted that in 2025, approximately 23 million people in Afghanistan — including 12 million children, who make up more than half the population — will require humanitarian assistance.
The report adds that this year, over 857,000 children under the age of five are expected to require treatment for acute malnutrition.
