Iranian authorities have launched an investigation after the bodies of a young Afghan couple were found in the basement of a shop in Qiamdasht, a suburb of Tehran, on August 3. The cause of death remains unknown, and the shop owner is currently being questioned by police.
The couple’s identities have not been made public, and their connection to the property is still unclear. The case comes amid rising concern over the safety of Afghan migrants in Iran, where reports of violence, mistreatment, and deaths have been increasing—particularly after recent geopolitical tensions and stepped-up deportations.
Iran, home to one of the largest Afghan refugee populations, has seen growing criticism from human rights groups, who are demanding transparency, accountability, and independent investigations into alleged abuses. Advocates warn that without urgent action and oversight, conditions for Afghan migrants could further deteriorate.
