Google and Microsoft have both launched new AI-powered search tools — Google’s AI Mode and Microsoft’s Copilot Mode — which aim to improve how users find information online by integrating conversational AI into search.
Both tools function like AI chatbots, offering tailored answers rather than just a list of links. They handle queries like:
Product comparisons (e.g., e-bikes)
Meal planning with dietary constraints
Job listings in specific locations
Complex or controversial topics (e.g., vaccine safety)
Google AI Mode combines search with text, image, and voice input.
Microsoft Copilot adapts results based on open browser tabs (“context clues”), adjusting suggestions accordingly.
Both tools try to summarize multiple viewpoints — especially useful in misinformation-prone topics.
Both platforms prioritize scientific consensus and cite reliable sources like the WHO and CDC. They may present “alternative perspectives,” but with disclaimers or warnings to avoid spreading false information.
They don’t yet handle real-world tasks like making reservations or uploading resumes — despite promotional claims.
Current capabilities are limited to synthesizing information, not completing actions.
These tools are evolving search engines, not full personal assistants — helpful for organizing info, but not yet ready to perform tasks or replace traditional web use.
