Fingerprints, passkeys, and facial recognition are increasingly replacing traditional passwords, as major technology firms warn the “password era” is nearing its end.
In a July blog post, two Microsoft executives declared that the company has been developing “more secure” login options for years and has offered them by default to new users since May. Other platforms, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, require extra verification steps like entering codes sent to verified email addresses.
Cybersecurity experts warn that passwords are often weak, reused across services, and easily stolen in data breaches. Benoit Grunemwald of Eset noted that an eight-character password can be cracked in minutes, and a recent discovery by Cybernews revealed a database containing 16 billion stolen login credentials.
Tech giants including Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and TikTok have joined the Fast Identity Online Alliance (FIDO) to promote password-free methods, particularly passkeys. These use smartphones or other devices to approve logins via PIN or biometrics, preventing phishing attacks.
However, experts caution that passwords remain widespread because they are simple and familiar. Passkey adoption is hindered by setup requirements and more complex recovery processes if a device is lost.
“Ultimately, people will need to secure their smartphones and devices,” Grunemwald warned, predicting these will become prime targets for cybercriminals in the future.
