Afghan Cricketers Secure Key Roles as IPL 2026 Retention Lists Revealed

In a significant endorsement of their talent and impact, four Afghan cricketers have been retained by their respective franchises for the highly anticipated 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The retention lists, announced by all teams on Saturday, highlight the growing stature of Afghan players in the world’s premier T20 league.

The retained stars represent a mix of established superstars and promising talent, underscoring the depth of cricket in Afghanistan.

The Retained Quartet:

  • Rashid Khan (Gujarat Titans): The leg-spinning maestro and global T20 icon remains the cornerstone of the Gujarat Titans’ lineup. His retention was a foregone conclusion, given his match-winning abilities with the ball, explosive lower-order hitting, and leadership qualities.

  • Azmatullah Omarzai (Punjab Kings): The dynamic all-rounder, known for his powerful batting and handy medium-pace bowling, has been kept by the Punjab Kings. His ability to contribute in both departments makes him a valuable asset as the franchise looks to build a competitive squad.

  • Noor Ahmad (Chennai Super Kings): In a strategic move, the Chennai Super Kings have retained young left-arm wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad. Under the mentorship of MS Dhoni and learning from the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Ahmad is seen as a crucial part of CSK’s future spin-bowling plans.

  • Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar (Mumbai Indians): In a surprising but fascinating retention, the five-time champions have kept 17-year-old off-spinner Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar. This move signals the franchise’s intent to invest in raw, unique talent, with Ghazanfar’s height and unusual trajectory marking him as a player for the future.

Notable Releases and the Upcoming Auction

While the retained players celebrate their security, the announcement also brought news of several Afghan stars who will enter the auction pool. This list includes the explosive Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the talented left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi, and all-rounder Karim Janat, alongside Mujee-ur-Rahman and Sediqullah Atal. Their release sets the stage for a potential bidding war as other teams look to bolster their squads with proven T20 performers.

Looking Ahead

The focus now shifts to the IPL 2026 Player Auction, scheduled to be held in Dubai on December 16. The released Afghan players will be among hundreds of cricketers from around the world vying for new contracts.

While the official start date for the 2026 IPL season is yet to be announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the retention lists have successfully ignited excitement among fans, marking the first major step in the build-up to another thrilling tournament.
