Afghan U-19 Cricket Squad Hailed as Heroes Upon Triumphant Return to Kabul

Kabul erupted in celebration on Tuesday as Afghanistan’s Under-19 national cricket team returned home to a jubilant welcome following a historic and undefeated tour of the subcontinent. The young squad arrived at Kabul International Airport to cheers from fans and a formal reception by senior officials from the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), capping off a month of remarkable performances.

The team’s successful campaign began in Bangladesh, where they secured a commanding 2-0 victory in a bilateral series against the hosts. Carrying that momentum, they traveled to India for a highly competitive tri-nation series, where they achieved a stunning clean sweep, defeating India’s U-19 side in all three of their head-to-head encounters. The final match of the tri-series was abandoned due to rain, but Afghanistan had already sealed both series triumphs.

Addressing a press conference at the ACB headquarters, head coach Rais Ahmadzai hailed the tour as a resounding success. “Our mission was to test our mettle against the best in Asia, and the boys delivered beyond expectation. Winning both matches in Bangladesh and then securing three victories against a formidable Indian side is a tremendous achievement,” he stated.

Ahmadzai emphasized the strategic value of the tours, noting, “These high-pressure games are invaluable. They forge the character and skill of a team, providing the exact experience needed to build a World Cup-caliber squad. Facing these opponents has perfectly prepared our young players for the challenges of the Asia Cup and the World Cup.”

Expressing his full confidence in the squad, Ahmadzai added, “I am thoroughly satisfied with the performance of every player in all departments—batting, bowling, and fielding. This gives us great belief that we can make a significant and successful impact in the upcoming global tournaments.”

Team captain Mahboob Taskin echoed his coach’s sentiments, highlighting the growth in team spirit and self-assurance. “Competing and winning in such demanding environments has given us priceless experience and a massive boost in confidence. We are now mentally and tactically prepared to raise our game even higher,” he said.

All-rounder Faisal Shinawzadeh credited the team’s rigorous preparation for their success. “We trained for several months with a clear goal. To execute our plans so effectively against top teams proves our hard work is paying off. We are returning not just with trophies, but with reinforced belief in our abilities,” Shinawzadeh remarked.

The squad’s triumphant return sets a powerful precedent as they now enter the final phase of preparation for the ACC Men’s U-19 Asia Cup. In a notable milestone for Afghan cricket, Afghanistan will host the prestigious tournament, which is scheduled to be held from December 12 to 21 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Riding a wave of momentum and national pride, the young Afghan stars are poised to enter the competition as one of the favorites, carrying the hopes of a cricket-loving nation on their shoulders.
