Glenn Maxwell Withdraws from IPL 2026 Auctions, Ending a 13-Year Era

Abu Dhabi, December 2, 2025 – Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially withdrawn from next month’s Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions, bringing an end to his 13-year association with the world’s most popular and lucrative T20 cricket league.

The 37-year-old explosive hitter, who has been a marquee name in the tournament since his debut in 2012, confirmed his decision in a personal statement released today. Maxwell was most recently with the Punjab Kings, who bought him for 42 million rupees (approx. $467,000) for the 2025 season. However, after a modest return of 48 runs and four wickets across seven matches, the franchise released him in November.

In his statement, Maxwell reflected on the profound impact the IPL has had on his career and life. “It’s a big call, and one I make with a lot of gratitude for everything this league has given me,” he wrote. “The IPL has helped shape me as a cricketer and as a person. I’ve been lucky to play with world-class teammates, represent incredible franchises, and perform in front of fans whose passion is unmatched. The memories, the challenges, and the energy of India will stay with me forever.”

Maxwell’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in IPL history. Known for his electrifying fielding, inventive stroke-play, and game-changing performances, he played for four franchises: the Delhi Daredevils/Capitals, the Mumbai Indians, the Kings XI Punjab/Punjab Kings, and the Royal Challengers Bangalore. His pinnacle came in 2014 with Punjab Kings, where he amassed 552 runs at a stunning strike rate of 187.75, cementing his reputation as a global T20 superstar.

His exit follows a growing trend of veteran international stars reassessing their T20 league commitments. Last week, former South African captain Faf du Plessis also opted out of the IPL 2026 auctions, choosing instead to focus on his role in the Pakistan Super League. In a related move, West Indies powerhouse Andre Russell, while not entering the auction pool, has joined the coaching staff of his longtime franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders, signaling a potential transition into a mentorship role.

Cricket analysts suggest Maxwell’s decision may be influenced by a desire to manage his workload and focus on his international career with Australia, particularly with major tournaments on the horizon. It also opens the door for him to explore other global league opportunities or take a more selective approach to his cricket calendar.

The IPL 2026 auctions are scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, where franchises will now have to recalibrate their strategies in the absence of one of the league’s most iconic overseas attractions. Maxwell’s absence will undoubtedly leave a void, both in terms of on-field brilliance and off-field charisma, closing a defining era for one of the IPL’s most entertaining and impactful overseas players.
