Haaland’s Historic Hat-Trick Powers Norway Towards World Cup Amidst Political Protests

OSLO – Erling Haaland delivered a masterclass, scoring a sensational hat-trick to become the fastest male player to reach 50 international goals, as Norway thrashed Israel 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier overshadowed by significant pro-Palestinian protests outside Oslo’s Ullevaal Stadium.

The match, which leaves Norway firmly in control of their qualifying destiny, was preceded by a charged atmosphere as hundreds of demonstrators gathered, chanting “Free Palestine” and condemning Israel’s military actions in Gaza as a “genocide,” according to AFP journalists. Norwegian police intervened, using tear gas to disperse the crowd and making several arrests.

Political Tensions Overshadow Football

The geopolitical conflict cast a long shadow over the footballing contest. Before a ball was kicked, the contrasting scenes set the tone for the evening. Outside, the air was filled with smoke and chants, while inside the stadium, a pocket of Israeli fans waved national flags and held up a banner that read, “Let the Ball Talk!”—a poignant plea for the focus to remain on the pitch.

The tension is expected to continue into the next round of fixtures, with Israel set to host Italy in Udine on Tuesday. That match is already anticipated to be a tense affair, with local authorities limiting ticket sales to just 5,000 amid security concerns and expected further demonstrations.

Norway’s Commanding Performance

Once the game began, it was the Erling Haaland show. The Manchester City striker’s quest for his 50th goal initially met resistance from Israeli goalkeeper Daniel Peretz, who saved Haaland’s first penalty, only for the referee to order a retake due to encroachment. Peretz heroically denied him a second time, but it was a temporary reprieve.

Norway broke the deadlock in the 18th minute through an Anan Khalaili own goal, settling any home nerves. Haaland then announced his arrival, using his blistering pace to race clear of the defense and slot home his landmark 49th international goal. A second Israeli own goal, this time from Idan Nachmias, made it 3-0 before halftime, effectively ending the contest.

The second half was a procession. Haaland powered in a header for his 50th, and with 18 minutes remaining, he completed his sixth international hat-trick with another clinical headed finish, taking his tally to a staggering 51 goals in just 46 appearances for his country.

Qualifying Picture Comes into Focus

The comprehensive victory sends a clear message to the rest of Group I. Norway now sit top with 18 points, a commanding six points clear of second-placed Italy, who kept pace with a 3-1 away win against Estonia. For a nation that has not qualified for a major tournament since Euro 2000, the dream of reaching the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico is now tantalizingly close.

For Israel, the heavy defeat compounds a miserable evening. Their meek performance leaves them three points behind Italy in third place, knowing only a victory in Udine on Tuesday will keep their fading qualification hopes alive.

Meanwhile, Italy, desperate to return to the World Cup stage for the first time since 2014, will view their upcoming match as a critical hurdle. Goals from Moise Kean, Mateo Retegui, and Pio Esposito in Tallinn secured a vital three points, but their direct clash with Israel now carries immense sporting and political weight.
