Le Court Makes History with First African Stage Win at Women’s Tour de France

Mauritian cyclist Kim Le Court has made history by becoming the first African rider to win a stage in the Women’s Tour de France.

Kim Le Court, a 29-year-old cyclist from Mauritius, became the first African woman ever to win a stage at the Women’s Tour de France, marking a significant milestone for African cycling.

It was a double celebration for Le Court, who claimed victory in a thrilling sprint finish on Wednesday during Stage 5 and reclaimed the overall leader’s yellow jersey.

Le Court edged out Dutch riders Demi Vollering and Anna van der Breggen after a challenging 166km ride from Chasseneuil-du-Poitou Futuroscope to Guéret—the longest stage of this year’s Tour.

Overnight leader Marianne Vos lost her yellow jersey to the AG Insurance–Soudal team rider after finishing eighth, 33 seconds behind Le Court.

Le Court, who previously wore the yellow jersey after Stage 2, now leads France’s Pauline Ferrand-Prévot by 18 seconds in the general classification.

“It’s really been a dream start to the Tour—the stage win, the yellow jersey,” said Le Court.
“I wasn’t even thinking about it when we started in Brittany.”

She added:

“As for what happens next, we’ll see, because I don’t know my limits in the mountains. This is my first major stage race where my team has asked me to compete for the overall classification.”

Demi Vollering, the 2023 Tour champion and a favorite for this year’s edition, currently sits in third place, 23 seconds off the lead, after recovering from a heavy crash earlier in the race.

Last year’s winner, Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma, finished fourth in Stage 5 and is well positioned overall—just 24 seconds behind the leader.

Thursday’s Stage 6 is a mountainous 123.7km route from Clermont-Ferrand to Ambert, featuring three climbs, including the Category 1 ascent of the Col du Béal. The race will conclude on Sunday.
