US Open: Raducanu Crashes Out After Ruthless Rybakina Display

Britain’s Emma Raducanu bowed out of the US Open after a dominant performance from fellow Grand Slam champion Elena Rybakina in the third round.

Raducanu, 22, had hoped to secure a statement victory against a top player to mark her recent progress, but was comprehensively beaten 6-1, 6-2.

Ninth seed Rybakina dismantled Raducanu’s serve, breaking four times with relentless returning. “It was a difficult experience facing her when she was playing so well. I just feel that in every department she was better,” Raducanu told BBC Sport.

A shaky start, in which Raducanu was broken at the first attempt after falling 0-40 behind, set the tone for the one-sided contest. The world number 36 never found rhythm or belief in the rallies and fell in just 62 minutes.

The defeat continues Raducanu’s struggles against elite opposition, leaving her with just three wins in 18 career matches against top-10 players.

The 2021 US Open champion was the last British woman remaining in the singles draw, while Cameron Norrie carries the nation’s hopes in the men’s event. Norrie, 29, faces 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic later on Friday in the third round.
