Jennie makes history with solo artist win at Melon Music Awards

44

In a historic moment for South Korea’s music industry, BLACKPINK’s Jennie claimed the prestigious Record of the Year (Daesang) at the 2024 Melon Music Awards (MMA), becoming the first solo artist ever to receive the ceremony’s top honor. The landmark win solidifies her status not just as a global K-pop phenomenon, but as a definitive solo force.

Held in Seoul on December 1, the awards ceremony saw Jennie triumph for her groundbreaking debut solo album, ‘Ruby’, released this past March. The album shattered streaming records and dominated charts worldwide, making the Daesang victory a fitting culmination of a year defined by bold artistic independence and massive commercial success.

A Couture Moment on the Red Carpet
Complementing her historic achievement was a show-stopping fashion statement. Jennie graced the event in a custom Georges Hobeika ballgown from the designer’s 2025 Fall Couture collection. The ensemble masterfully blended structure and romance: a meticulously tailored white corset, intricately detailed with crystal-embellished straps, flowed into a voluminous and elegant black tulle skirt. The dramatic silhouette was both breathtaking and artistic, perfectly capturing Jennie’s unique blend of power and grace.

Her styling exemplified modern red-carpet intelligence. Choosing minimal accessories, she accentuated the elaborate gown with a single emerald-green statement ring and a relaxed, low ponytail adorned with a delicate silver flower pendant. This deliberate restraint allowed the craftsmanship of the couture piece to command full attention.

From Music Charts to Fashion Frontlines
Jennie’s dual dominance in music and fashion was on full display. Beyond her record-breaking musical year, she has cemented her position as a luxury fashion icon. A longtime Global Ambassador for Chanel, she has also fronted major campaigns for houses like Jean Paul Gaultier and served as the face for Beats by Dre. Her appearance in Hobeika couture further extends her influence, spotlighting a designer celebrated for exquisite artistry.

Spotlight on Maison Georges Hobeika
Jennie’s choice of designer shone a light on Maison Georges Hobeika, which recently commemorated 30 years of its eponymous brand. Founded in Beirut in 1995, the house is a fixture on the Paris Haute Couture calendar, renowned for its detailed craftsmanship, luxurious fabrics, and elegantly dramatic designs. In a recent documentary, Lebanese designer Georges Hobeika and his son, Creative Director Jad Hobeika, revisited the brand’s evolution, emphasizing its deep heritage in both haute couture and ready-to-wear.

The evening was a testament to Jennie’s multifaceted impact: a history-making musician whose sartorial choices are as deliberate and influential as her art, seamlessly bridging the worlds of peak pop culture and high fashion.
