Trump Signals Potential NATO Exit Amid Standoff with Allies Over Iran

President Donald Trump has announced that he is “strongly considering” withdrawing the United States from NATO, citing frustration over what he characterized as a failure by allied nations to support US military action against Iran, according to an interview with Britain’s Daily Telegraph.

In the interview, Trump dismissed the transatlantic alliance as a “paper tiger” and suggested that American withdrawal from the defense pact was now “beyond reconsideration.” When asked whether he would rethink US membership following recent tensions, he responded, “Oh yes, I would say [it’s] beyond reconsideration.”

“I was never swayed by NATO,” Trump told the newspaper. “I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way.”

The remarks mark one of the most direct threats yet from Trump regarding US participation in NATO, a cornerstone of Western security since its founding in 1949. The president has long been a vocal critic of the alliance, frequently accusing European members of failing to meet defense spending commitments. However, his latest comments tie his dissatisfaction directly to a lack of allied backing for US military posture toward Iran a divergence that underscores widening rifts between Washington and its traditional partners.

A formal US exit from NATO would require an act of Congress or a two-thirds Senate vote, depending on the legal interpretation of existing treaty obligations. Nonetheless, Trump’s statement is likely to reignite concerns among US allies about the reliability of American security commitments.

NATO officials and European leaders have not yet issued a formal response to the president’s latest remarks.
