Severe floods in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province have killed five people and injured eight others, while destroying dams, roads, and thousands of acres of farmland, officials said.
Sediqullah Qureshi, Nangarhar’s director of information and culture, confirmed that heavy rains triggered the floods across the districts of Rodat, Haska Mina, and Chaparhar. The destruction has further strained communities already grappling with economic hardship and limited disaster-response capacity.
Neighboring provinces—including Khost, Kunar, and Maidan Wardak—have also been battered by recent storms. In Khost’s Matun district, flash floods collapsed house walls, killing two children, while another child was swept away by surging waters.
Afghanistan is among the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, repeatedly hit by destructive rains, flash floods, and storms. Humanitarian groups warn that without urgent investment in infrastructure and climate resilience, disasters of this scale will worsen, threatening lives, livelihoods, and food security across the country.
