MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan – Humanitarian aid from Japan and Turkmenistan has arrived in northern Afghanistan, offering critical support to survivors of a series of deadly earthquakes that have devastated the region.
Turkmenistan’s Contribution
On Saturday, Turkmenistan delivered a substantial relief shipment valued at around $510,000 (34 million afghanis). The aid, coordinated with Taliban authorities in Balkh province, includes 68 types of essential items such as food, medical supplies, clothing, and construction materials. The supplies were handed over at the Aqina border crossing for onward distribution to the quake-stricken areas of Balkh and Samangan provinces.
Japan’s Emergency Relief
Also on Saturday, the Japanese Embassy in Kabul announced the arrival of emergency aid from Japan. The shipment consists of vital relief items like blankets and mattresses for families who lost their homes. Ambassador Kenichi Masamoto expressed solidarity, stating, “We hope these emergency supplies quickly reach those most in need. The people of Japan stand with Afghanistan in this difficult time.” The supplies were entrusted to the Afghanistan Red Crescent Society and the IFRC for coordinated distribution.
The Ongoing Crisis
According to official reports, the earthquakes have killed at least 27 people and injured nearly 1,000. The tremors destroyed homes and infrastructure, compounding the humanitarian crisis as winter approaches. Aid agencies warn that continued aftershocks, harsh weather, and insufficient resources threaten to worsen the plight of thousands of survivors.
