Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families affected by the powerful earthquake in Afghanistan’s Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, declaring India’s readiness to provide humanitarian aid and stand in solidarity with the Afghan people.
On Monday, September 1, Modi posted on X, offering sympathies to the victims and their families, and reaffirmed India’s commitment to assist Afghanistan during this difficult time. India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar echoed this message, calling the disaster a “dark hour” for Afghanistan.
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry also issued a statement of sympathy, extending condolences to bereaved families and wishing the injured a swift recovery. Several other countries have voiced solidarity with Afghanistan as the scale of devastation becomes clearer.
Chinese President Xi Jinping extended his condolences as well, expressing grief over the widespread loss of life. His remarks coincided with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China, where Afghanistan’s tragedy was acknowledged by participating leaders.
The earthquake, registering 6.0 in magnitude, struck late Sunday night in eastern Afghanistan, flattening entire villages and causing mud-brick homes to collapse. Local authorities have confirmed more than 800 deaths and over 2,500 injuries, with fears the toll will rise as remote districts report casualties.
Rescue operations began in the early hours, with the Taliban government deploying helicopters and emergency teams. International organizations, including the United Nations and the Afghan Red Crescent, have mobilized to deliver food, medical supplies, and shelter to survivors in hard-hit mountain communities.
The swift international and regional response underscores both the urgency and the scale of the disaster. Yet Afghanistan’s difficult terrain, damaged infrastructure, and ongoing humanitarian crisis continue to pose major obstacles to effective relief efforts.
