Kabul – September 15: Children in Afghanistan are trapped in a cycle of “endless crises,” with millions cut off from education, healthcare, clean water, and protection, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned.
In a statement on Tuesday, UNICEF said that access to basic services has become “nothing less than a lifeline” for Afghan children, who remain the most vulnerable group in the country’s ongoing humanitarian emergency.
The agency reported that nearly 15 million children need humanitarian aid this year, while about 4 million are out of school—most of them girls. Malnutrition remains widespread, with more than half of children under five suffering from acute undernourishment.
“Afghanistan’s children are bearing the brunt of decades of conflict, poverty, and instability,” UNICEF said, warning that preventable diseases such as measles and diarrhea continue to claim young lives as the healthcare system struggles to function.
Despite the challenges, UNICEF noted that with funding from the Embassy of Japan in Afghanistan, it has been able to provide vital services, including vaccination campaigns, nutrition programs, and community-based education initiatives. The agency said these efforts not only address immediate needs but also help shield children from the long-term impact of the country’s instability.
Aid groups have repeatedly highlighted that no population in Afghanistan is more at risk than children. Since the Taliban takeover in 2021, restrictions on girls’ education, cuts in international development aid, and an economic collapse have compounded the crisis.
“The world cannot afford to look away,” UNICEF said in its appeal for renewed international support. “If urgent action is not taken, Afghanistan risks losing an entire generation.”
