India Streamlines Entry with Mandatory E-Arrival Card for All Foreign Travelers

New Delhi,  – In a significant move to modernize its borders, India has fully implemented a mandatory digital entry system for all foreign nationals. Effective today, travelers must complete and submit an “e-Arrival Card” through a dedicated online portal at least 72 hours before their departure for India, replacing the traditional paper-based disembarkation forms.

The new policy, announced by the Bureau of Immigration, is designed to accelerate immigration procedures, enhance national security, and improve the overall experience for the millions of international visitors arriving each year. The system applies to all foreign passport holders, including tourists, business professionals, students, conference attendees, and those seeking medical treatment.

From Paper to Pixels: A Streamlined Process

Previously, travelers filled out paper forms either onboard their flight or at immigration counters upon landing, a process that often contributed to long queues and delays, especially at peak hours at major hubs like Delhi and Mumbai.

The shift to a pre-submitted digital form is a key part of the government’s “Ease of Travel” initiative. “The digital e-Arrival Card is a transformative step towards a paperless, contactless, and more efficient immigration process,” stated a senior official from the Ministry of Home Affairs. “It will drastically reduce waiting times and create a more welcoming first impression for visitors to India.”

The required information on the e-Arrival form is largely consistent with the old paper version. Travelers must provide:

  • Full name, nationality, and passport details

  • Flight or vessel details (flight number, seat number)

  • Purpose of visit (e.g., tourism, business)

  • Intended address in India (hotel or residence)

  • Duration of stay

  • A list of countries visited in the six days prior to arrival in India

How It Works for Travelers

The process is straightforward. Travelers can access the free form on the official Indian Bureau of Immigration website or through a mobile-friendly app. No supporting documents need to be uploaded. Upon submission, an automated confirmation is generated and sent via email. This digital confirmation, which contains a unique QR code, is all that is required for entry.

While a digital copy on a phone or tablet is sufficient, authorities strongly recommend that travelers carry a printed copy to ensure a smooth inspection process at the border. It is crucial to note that the e-Arrival Card is not a substitute for a visa. All eligible foreign nationals must still obtain the appropriate visa before travel, and Indian citizens are wholly exempt from this new requirement.

Broader Implications: Security, Efficiency, and Digital India

Aviation and security experts have welcomed the move. “This brings India in line with global best practices adopted by countries like the United States (ESTA) and the United Kingdom,” explained travel industry analyst Sameer Bhardwaj. “Pre-screening traveler data allows authorities to perform risk assessments before a flight even lands, enhancing border security. For the traveler, it means walking straight to an e-gate or a much faster manual check.”

The initiative is also seen as a cornerstone of India’s broader “Digital India” campaign, aimed at leveraging technology to improve governance and public services. By digitizing the arrival process, the government creates a centralized, analyzable database of visitor movement, which can aid in everything from tourism planning to health security management, as demonstrated by similar systems used for health declarations during the pandemic.

The government has assured that all data collected through the portal will be protected under India’s data security laws. The rollout is expected to be a major boost for India’s tourism sector, projecting an image of a modern, efficient, and tech-savvy destination ready to welcome the world.
