AI Push Drives Merger of HR and IT Roles

412

A growing number of companies are merging their human resources and IT departments under single leadership, driven by the rise of artificial intelligence.

A survey by workplace software firm Nexthink found 64% of senior IT leaders at large firms expect the two functions to merge within five years.

At biotech giant Moderna, Chief People and Digital Technology Officer Tracey Franklin oversees both HR and IT, including AI integration. The company has trained all 5,000 employees to use OpenAI tools to redesign workflows.

Italian customer service group Covisian merged its 27,000-strong HR and IT operations in 2023. Chief People and Technology Officer Fabio Sattolo says the move accelerates decision-making and improves tools, such as an internal job posting system that doubled response rates.

Experts caution that while closer collaboration can streamline operations, merging departments risks diluting specialist skills.

Online bank Bunq has also grouped HR and IT within one larger team, aiming to automate 90% of operations by the end of 2025 without layoffs. Leaders say the goal is to let AI take over repetitive tasks so staff can focus on complex problem-solving.
