(DawatMedia24): The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan has climbed to 1,124, according to the Afghan Red Crescent Society, a leading humanitarian organization operating in the country.
The group reported on Tuesday that at least 3,251 people have been injured, many of them critically, while more than 8,000 houses have been completely destroyed or severely damaged. Thousands of families have been left homeless, and rescue operations remain underway in several affected districts.
The 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck late on Sunday night, shaking a wide swath of mountainous terrain. The tremor flattened entire villages, reduced mud-brick homes to rubble, and buried residents beneath collapsed structures. Survivors described frantic efforts to pull relatives from the debris with little more than their bare hands as heavy machinery and emergency medical services remain scarce in the remote region.
Local authorities fear the death toll could rise further as emergency teams continue to reach isolated villages that remain cut off by damaged roads and landslides. The Afghan Red Crescent has appealed for urgent assistance, citing shortages of tents, food, clean water, and medical supplies for those displaced by the disaster.
The quake is one of the deadliest natural disasters to strike Afghanistan in recent years, compounding a humanitarian crisis already worsened by economic hardship and limited international aid.
