KABUL: At least 31 people were injured and residents suffered property damage following a strong earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan on Friday night, local officials reported.
The tremor, which measured 6.5 on the Richter scale, struck around 10:00 PM, shaking several provinces including Nangarhar and Laghman.
According to a statement from the Nangarhar provincial office, 22 people, including women and children, were injured in the villages of Mujgandol, Stan, and Amlee in the Dara-i-Noor district. Emergency ambulances and medical teams from the Public Health Department were dispatched to the affected areas, providing on-site treatment to those with serious injuries. The provincial statement did not specify the extent of financial losses or property damage in Nangarhar.
In neighboring Laghman province, Abdul Malik Afghan, spokesperson for the governor, confirmed that nine people were injured and 18 houses were damaged in the earthquake. Local authorities are assessing the structural damage and providing assistance to affected families.
This latest earthquake comes shortly after another tremor measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck around midnight on Sunday, impacting Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, Panjshir, and Nuristan provinces. The previous earthquake caused significant devastation, particularly in Kunar province, where homes and infrastructure were heavily damaged.
Hamdullah Fetrat, deputy government spokesman, said on Thursday that the death toll from the previous earthquakes had risen to 2,205, with 3,640 people injured. Thousands more were displaced, and relief efforts continue amid fears of further aftershocks.
Authorities have urged residents in the affected regions to remain cautious, particularly at night, and to avoid staying in structurally unsafe buildings. Emergency response teams are working to deliver medical aid, food, and shelter to the affected communities.
