KABUL, Sept 14 — Afghanistan’s Media Support Organization (AMSO) has warned that growing restrictions are eroding press freedom and limiting public access to information.
In a statement on Sunday, AMSO said it was alarmed by reports of threats against journalists and new limits on media activity in several provinces. In Balkh, the Taliban-controlled national broadcaster has banned the airing of images. In Panjshir, all visual media operations have been suspended, while in Kandahar, authorities have prohibited the production of YouTube content.
AMSO described the measures as a serious blow to press freedom. It also cited claims by a former Taliban police chief in Paktia that Taliban forces had planned attacks on journalists, though several escaped.
Since retaking power in 2021, the Taliban has imposed tighter controls on Afghan media, including restrictions on reporting, closure of independent outlets and the detention of journalists. Many reporters have left the country, while those who remain face increasing pressure.
Media advocates warn that without international attention, Afghanistan’s independent press risks collapse, leaving the public with little access to unbiased information.
