Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed that foreign fighters from Pakistan, China, and several African nations are aiding Russian forces in northeastern Ukraine. He vowed that Ukraine would respond firmly to this growing international involvement.
Speaking on Monday, August 4, following a visit to the front lines in Kharkiv, Zelensky stated that Ukrainian troops have recently encountered foreign combatants allegedly supporting Russian operations. According to the president, fighters from Pakistan, China, various African countries, as well as Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, have been spotted in the region.
Zelensky reiterated earlier accusations that Russia is increasingly relying on foreign mercenaries to sustain its offensive, particularly as its own military losses mount. While Moscow has denied these claims, Zelensky said Ukraine’s forces have directly observed the presence of non-Russian fighters.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Zelensky wrote:
“Our soldiers are reporting the involvement of foreign mercenaries from China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and African countries in the fighting. Ukraine will respond to this.”
This is not the first time reports of foreign fighters supporting Russia have surfaced. In October last year, intelligence sources suggested that over 10,000 North Korean soldiers may have been sent to assist Russian military operations in Ukraine.
Zelensky’s latest remarks have renewed concerns over the growing internationalization of the war, raising critical questions about how Russia is reinforcing its forces. Experts warn that the alleged use of foreign mercenaries—if confirmed—could further complicate the geopolitical dimensions of the conflict.
Ukraine continues to call for greater support from its Western allies, emphasizing that Russia is not only relying on its own troops but is increasingly recruiting external forces to prolong and escalate the war.
