279

KABUL– The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) says Afghanistan’s urban population is projected to reach 50 percent by 2060, up from just 5 percent in 1950 and 25 percent in 2022.

In a post on X, the agency warned that Afghan cities are unprepared for such rapid growth, urging action to harness urbanization as a “positive driver for change.”

According to the 1403 annual report from the National Statistics and Information Authority, Afghanistan’s population stands at 35.7 million, with about 9 million currently living in cities.
