Kabul, August 6 — Indonesia has donated $3.5 million to the World Food Programme (WFP) to support school feeding efforts in Afghanistan, helping provide fortified biscuits to 200,000 schoolchildren in a bid to combat malnutrition and boost school attendance.
According to a statement released by WFP on social media platform X, the contribution will allow the organization to supply over 1,200 metric tons of protein- and vitamin-enriched biscuits over the next three months to primary school students, both girls and boys, across the country.
These nutritious biscuits are designed to improve children’s health, focus, and ability to learn, especially in regions where food insecurity and school dropout rates remain critically high.
“This contribution ensures that Afghan schoolchildren receive the nutrition they need for a brighter future,” said Rina Setiawati, Director of International Development Cooperation at Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
WFP’s Deputy Country Director in Afghanistan noted that for many children, the biscuit distributed at school may be the only nutritious meal they receive each day, providing vital energy for learning and development.
The school feeding initiative is particularly focused on regions experiencing:

Low school enrollment
WFP emphasized that providing a daily snack not only supports childhood nutrition but also serves as an incentive for parents to send their children—especially girls—to school.

Afghanistan continues to face one of the worst hunger crises in the world. WFP estimates that in 2025, around:

1.2 million pregnant and breastfeeding mothers
will suffer from acute malnutrition.
While Indonesia’s contribution is a critical step toward addressing this crisis, WFP warns that funding shortfalls remain a major challenge, threatening the continuation and expansion of life-saving nutrition and education programs.
