The Taliban governor in Balkh confirmed that fiber optic internet in this province has been cut off by the order of Hibatullah Akhundzada, the group’s leader.
Ataullah Zaid, the Taliban governor’s spokesperson in Balkh, described the reason for the internet shutdown as the prevention of immoral activities, adding that an alternative domestic route will be created for essential cases.
Home and office internet (cable and Wi-Fi) in Balkh was cut off yesterday (Monday, September 15).
So far, the restriction on internet access has only been implemented in Balkh. However, given that the Taliban leader issued this order, restrictions on internet access may also be imposed in other provinces.
Despite the Taliban’s restrictions on the freedoms and rights of Afghan citizens, internet access in the country’s cities has so far remained open.
