Tamba, Japan – Japan has recorded its highest-ever temperature, marking another alarming sign of extreme weather linked to climate change.
On Wednesday, the temperature in Tamba City, located about 560 kilometers (350 miles) southwest of Tokyo, soared to 41.2°C (106.16°F), breaking the previous national record of 41.1°C (105.98°F) set in 2018 and matched again in 2020.
Other cities also saw scorching temperatures exceeding 40°C, including Fukuchiyama (Kyoto Prefecture), Maniwa (Okayama Prefecture), and Nishiwaki (Hyogo Prefecture).
As a result, heatstroke alerts were issued across 33 of Japan’s 47 prefectures, according to national broadcaster NHK.
Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported that more than 10,800 people were hospitalized for heatstroke in the past week, with 16 confirmed heat-related deaths.
This latest heatwave follows Japan’s hottest June on record, where nationwide average temperatures rose 2.34°C above normal. The country also experienced its hottest year ever in 2024, setting temperature records for the second year in a row.
Climate experts warn that such record-breaking heatwaves are likely to become more frequent and severe unless significant action is taken to curb global warming.
