Japan has announced it will send emergency relief supplies to earthquake-stricken Kunar province, joining Turkey, Iran, and India in providing vital humanitarian support as the death toll continues to climb.
The Japanese Embassy in Kabul confirmed on Wednesday that the aid package—sent at the request of the Red Cross and Red Crescent—will include tents, blankets, and other essential supplies for families who lost their homes and belongings in the disaster.
The commitment follows the powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan earlier this week, leaving widespread devastation. According to Taliban authorities, at least 1,411 people have been killed and more than 3,124 injured, while the World Health Organization estimates that over 12,000 people have been directly affected.
Rescue workers are still recovering bodies from the rubble three days after the quake, underscoring both the scale of destruction and the urgent need for international aid. Entire villages in remote mountainous areas remain cut off, with survivors lacking food, clean water, and medical care.
Japan’s move highlights growing global concern for Afghanistan’s fragile humanitarian situation, where local resources remain severely limited. The embassy stressed Tokyo’s continued commitment to supporting Afghans during emergencies, adding that additional assistance could follow depending on needs on the ground.
The delivery of Japanese aid, alongside regional contributions, underscores the importance of international solidarity in addressing one of Afghanistan’s deadliest natural disasters in recent decades. Humanitarian organizations continue to warn that without swift and sustained support, thousands of vulnerable families could face worsening conditions in the weeks ahead.
