In the bustling streets of Kabul, a quiet revolution is taking place. The audiobook market is emerging as a new favorite among the city’s tech-savvy and literature enthusiasts, as the demand for digital content continues to grow.

Accessible via smartphones, tablets, and other digital devices, audiobooks are providing a novel means for Afghans to engage with literature. This trend is driven by a variety of factors including increasing internet access, the rising popularity of smartphones, and a burgeoning interest in new ways of consuming content.

Afghanistan has traditionally been a society with a rich oral storytelling culture. The shift towards audiobooks is seen as a natural progression, blending age-old traditions with modern technology. According to local tech analysts, there has been a noticeable uptick in app downloads and subscriptions related to audiobooks over the past few years.

“Digital content, especially audiobooks, has found a unique place in Afghan society,” said Bilal Nazari, a digital media consultant based in Kabul. “It’s a format that is convenient, especially for people with busy schedules and those who prefer listening over reading.”

Driven by a younger, tech-savvy demographic, the popularity of audiobooks is also attributed to the educational value they bring. With many educational institutions embracing digital tools, audiobooks serve as a valuable resource for students and professionals alike. Recently, Daud  Junbish, veteran famous Afghan journalist published Khushal Khan’s classic Pashto poems through BBC Pashto.

Challenges and Opportunities:

Despite the promising growth, the market faces several challenges. Infrastructure issues, such as inconsistent internet access and digital literacy, remain significant barriers. Additionally, economic instability in the region can hinder the market’s growth. Political ups and downs, including changes in government policies and regulatory frameworks, further complicate the market’s development, particularly, since the Taliba took over the power in August 2021.

However, local entrepreneurs and tech companies are optimistic. Start-ups focusing on localized content and collaborations with international audiobook platforms are paving the way for sustainable growth.

Users like Khadija Wafa, a student at Kabul University, appreciate the flexibility audiobooks offer. “I can listen to any book while commuting or even while doing household chores. It’s a transformative way to learn and enjoy literature,” Wafa said.

For many, audiobooks are not just a source of entertainment but also a means to preserve the rich literary heritage of Afghanistan. Initiatives to produce audiobooks in local languages and dialects are gaining traction, highlighting the importance of cultural preservation.

Industry experts suggest that the audiobook sector in Kabul is poised for significant growth. The combination of a young population and increasing digital adoption creates a fertile ground for expansion.

Dost Mohammad Safi, a technology entrepreneur, believes the market is on the cusp of a breakthrough. “We are seeing more content creators and platforms investing in Afghan-specific content. The next few years will be crucial in determining the trajectory of this industry,” Safi said.

As Afghanistan continues to rebuild and modernize, the audiobook market offers a glimmer of hope and innovation, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of its people. In the market, a variety of apps for audiobooks are available, with some even being free of charge. These apps provide users with accessible options to enjoy audiobooks, contributing to the market’s appeal despite the existing hurdles.
